Over the years much research has been done into the connections between diet and cardiovascular health. In the developed countries of North America and Europe, people consume a lot of protein and fat, and a prevalence of cardiovascular disease is the ostensible result. Yet researchers found that cardiovascular disease is relatively unknown among the Eskimos of Greenland, whose regular diet is very high in fats and protein.
How to explain this apparent conundrum? The answer may lie in the fact that the Eskimo diet is rich in cold water ocean fish species such as cod and mackerel. These types of fish contain high amounts of unsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids, and research has indicated that Omega-3 fatty acids may play an important role in supporting and preserving cardiovascular health.
Studies have suggested that fish oil rich in Omega-3 significantly reduces blood triglyceride levels, stimulates circulation, and may be helpful in reducing blood pressure. There have been indications that it assists in the breakdown of fibrin, a protein in the blood involved in clot and scar formation. The results of the research have been encouraging enough that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted qualified health claim status to two types of Omega-3, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), stating that supportive evidence shows that consumption of DHA and EPA may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
DHA also appears to provide important nutritional support for the development and function of the central nervous system and the eyes, and for this reason, it is recommended for use by expectant mothers. Moreover, declines in cognitive function of the brain has been linked to DHA deficiency, and this is may be why fish is often referred to as “brain food”.
